For The Birds

Feeling like spring? There sure has been a lot of bird action in our yard these past few days. I think a few may have snuck in to roost in my dining room.

That is ok…the more, the merrier. Don’t you think?

Several of you asked where my mosaic birdhouse will end up. You know us girls move things around a lot – but, for now, Penny’s mosaic birdhouse sits on my white hutch in our dining room. (Kathy, you were right!)

I have had several emails asking about my crockery bowls on top of the hutch. They are old mixing bowls (except for the solid green USA pottery bowl) from the 1930’s and 40’s. My favorite bowls are ones with stripes, like these green ones. They match the green legs on my old metal desk that is now our dining room table. My favorite crockery bowls are made by USA, Watt, Red Wing and Bauer. Here is a link to find vintage bowls – click HERE, HERE and HERE. I have found some of my bowls at thrift stores, estate sales and antique stores. These old bowls often times have a wonderful old crazing to the finish – and maybe a little crack, chip or stain here and there. After all, they have a history and a story. The more imperfections, the bigger the story – don’t you think?

I know that many of you know Penny (Lavender Hill Studio – click HERE to link you there), a very talented mosaic artist and blog friend, who makes the most incredible mosaic pieces – from lamps, tables, signs and birdhouses – and more. She can take the simplest of objects and make them into works of art. When I visited Daisy Cottage (my sweet Kim’s adorable home!!!) I saw Kim’s birdhouse (click here for that post) that she commissioned Penny to make for her. It was love at first site for me. I knew that I just had to have one of Penny’s birdhouses. My adorable friend, Elizabeth (and fellow blogger), owns a Penny piece, too. She has a beautiful lamp that shares a spot on her kitchen island – it is amazing!

Later I wrote to Penny and asked if she would be interested in making a birdhouse for me. After a few emails, we decided on the plate and bird that I wanted to use in my birdhouse. Penny was such a doll to work with. She knows my taste and my vision and came up with this precious piece! Penny uses a “signature” tile – can you pick it out below? It is a BUTTERFLY!! A pink one – on the side of the roof. This is her mark – and a perfect one for me! (you know my butterfly experiences – so this was icing on the cake – rather, birdhouse!!).

Could the “cottage" be any cuter? Penny found this word on the underside of the plate that she used. Penny uses these kinds of perfections in her creations – always thinking outside of the box to make the piece even more specific for the customer. Knowing that I am all about “cottage” things, she added this surprise in knowing it would be just the extra touch I’d love. And, guess what? I LOVE IT!!!!! (swooooonnnn….)
