Tick Tock

P1010068 One of my favorite idioms is “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” – meaning different people have different ideas about what they find to be beautiful. That is what makes us unique from each other.

Some folks think that old things should be tossed away in landfills, like these old clocks. I love them and have them scattered around in my home for display. Someone else may think they are hideous because they don’t work or have a rusty and worn metal body and might ask what good are they if they don’t keep time? Sure, I guess that makes sense, but look further than their intended purpose.P1010069 These old clocks gleam in the light and have bright and cheerful faces – almost as if they are smiling back at us. They are handsome, sturdy and a tad bit whimsical.

Marvel, Ring, Tix…..perfect words for old clock faces.P1010074 In a group they make for quite an impressive vignette, lined up like a chorus line, ready to break into a rendition of “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” by WHAM.P1010082 Their metal frames are pitted, worn and a bit wobbly, like a tipsy seaman. But I love them, they are imperfect and get better with age. (Like us!)

Beautiful little pieces of art from the olden days.P1010080 This little charmer is from Germany and has the most adorable chipped enameled sides with a scattering of delicate flowers. And it doesn’t work, but it’s perfectly beautiful nevertheless.P1010076I am nostalgic when it comes to old bits and bobs. They are beautiful to me and that is that.

I will leave you with this today:

Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Oh, and don’t forget to “spring forward” for the time change tonight.

Till next time….tootles.

I have a white enamel clock that hasn't kept time in eons, yet it has a place of prominence. Love your line-up of old clocks and I'm so glad that you haven't taken them all apart to use in other projects. It is nice to think of old and wonky as beautiful because I'm growing older and more wonky every day. Have a great weekend, Becky!

What beautiful photos of old clocks. I love them too and have a small collection. I just love putting them on a shelf, passing by them and smiling, which I'm sure you do as well.

Old stuff full of memories and nostalgia.....what could be better.

Wake Me Up Before You Go Go...now I will be singing that all night.

I LOVE CLOCKS too....
and what is so cool about the ones you have collected
Is not just their "style"
but think of the HOURS and MINUTES they recorded in someones life
a job
time for church
the time a baby was born
the time a loved one died

All time recorded..that adds up to a whole life. They have a story (if they could talk)

Becky I LOVE your clocks!!! I have several vintage ones in my bedroom and I think only one works. I started collecting them because I kept my mom and dad's. I don't mind if they don't all work. I could never keep all of them wound anyway. I do good keeping my grandfather and wall clock wound. I love your German clock, sooo pretty. Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

I think I love clocks because I am always fascinated with the passage of time. I've been that way since I was a child. And, even if the clocks don't work there is an old saying that even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Love your collection-xo Diana

What a perfectly charming post for "spring forward" day. I have admired the way you incorporate these old clocks into your decorating. In fact, I bought one at a thrift shop after seeing a similar one in one of your posts. I doubt I would have thought to buy it if it hadn't been for your inspiration. So, thanks for the inspiration :).

I do like clocks! In the dining room is the clock that was passed down to the Great Dane from his grandparents. Each of the children has an old clock from the family - I'm making sure that they inherit my interest!

I love little clocks too. The more imperfect the better! I set the time on each one for a birthday in our family. (7:03-July 3rd) Makes it kind of fun. Mimi

Hi Becky,
I adore your collection of clocks. I would never think of tossing those away. They just have a certain charm when they become chippy and worn.

I've not been fortunate enough to come across any vintage clocks but you can bet I will keep my eye out for them!
