Awhile back I mentioned that I was working on redoing our guest bedroom. My inspiration came from a Better Homes and Gardens featured home.
Because today is REDNESDAY – thanks to Sue over at It’s A Very Cherry World Blog – I thought it to be appropriate to share the reds with y’all.
This is a rather long post, so pull up your chair and tuck yourself in and grab a favorite beverage. There is a lot to share with you here. Thanks for the visit, too!
The guest room was done on a shoe string budget and also filled with loving gifts from friends. The sign below was made by my dear friend, Kathy – who is the sister of Tina over at Cherry Hill Cottage Blog. The sign was a Christmas present – isn’t it just sweet?
Decorating doesn’t have to break your budget. The red buffalo check curtains were a thrift store find for 4.00 for the pair. They are vintage raw silk curtains from Japan and are adorned with ruffles and red rick rack. The white curtain rod was 22.00 from Target.
The balloon valance was another thrift store find for 4.00. Not too “shabby” for a Rachell Ashwell shabby chic curtain panel.
I have been collecting little lavender sachet hearts and put them in an ironstone bowl on the dresser. The bowl was a 10.00 find at a flea market and the hearts were 10.00-15.00 a piece. See the little felt scottie dogs? These were a gift from my sweet friend, Emma, who made them and gave them to me for Christmas. Emma has a beautiful scottie dog, Bob. Infact, he and our Duhgall look very much alike!
Handpicked flowers from my yard add a splash of color and smell wonderful with the lavender sachets. A primitive horse pull toy adds a bit of whimsy to the vignette.
My very sweet and talented friend, Jean, made the BEAUTIFUL red and white quilt that hangs on the wall behind the dresser. Not long ago she was showing me some of the quilt tops that she had been working on. When she brought out this one, my heart stopped!! I have been looking for a red and white quilt for some time and this one just spoke to me. Gorgeous red florals with checks....oh my! She would not let me pay her for it, so I traded some vintage goodies in exchange. Jean did all of the quilting herself on a long-arm quilting machine. To make it even more special, she stitched in Jordan’s name into the piece. This, of course, just made me cry…..This VERY special piece is an honor to have as it was made with love and great attention to detail by my very special friend.
The quilt matches my Target lampshade that was 18.00. A vintage clock (5.00) hangs from the lamp with a red and white vintage ribbon.
On the 5.00 enamelware tray is a sweet vintage clock with red flowers. It doesn’t work, but for 3.00 at a garage sale, I don’t really care. It is just cute!
In our house, the saying goes that “mo is better!” This goes along with having tons of pillows on the bed. Who cares that it takes five minutes to clear the bed! The large red checkered pillow sham was 10.00 at Summer Cottage in Petaluma. The Euro pillow form was on sale for 10.00 at Bed Bath and Beyond. Next to the red checkered pillow are two blue floral pillows that I paid 5.00 each for at a garage sale. They are from IKEA. Just in front of them are Cath Kidston pillows that I got on sale for half off. A splurge, but I LOVE her style!
Roses are red and violets are blue, for a mere fifty cents, I bought you!
Linens don’t have to break your bank. The white eyelet sheet was .50 at a garage sale – and in perfect condition. Below that is a Ralph Lauren blue and red checked sheet that was 3.00 at a thrift store.
Finding the right bed skirt was my biggest challenge as the bed is very high. I looked for quite some time and just could not find the perfect one. One lucky day I found this red and white check fabric at the Salvation Army. It is (well, was) a Ralph Lauren duvet cover for a king size bed. You know there was a lot of fabric here for a king size cover!! Check this out: it was only a dollar! Yup, one buck! I bought a full sized bed skirt and used the top piece that fits under the mattress and attached the skirt to that. For 4.00 I have a custom bed skirt.
Next to the bed is a little stool that I paid 4.00 for at a garage sale. The original stool was brown with a boring fabric cover. I painted the wood white and recovered the top with a blue and white ticking stripe. The rag rug was a thrift store find for 2.00.
Our guests have to have good reading material. I got this red wired basket for 5.00 one day when I was thrifting. It is perfect to hold magazines and books. Dollar Tree fake flowers fill an antique enamelware piece that once served as an IV holder for a hospital.
Jean also gifted me with the sweet bluebird lamp base. I told her I was on the search for a lamp with a bird on it and she just happened to have one stored away. Free is always great!
When I saw the Pretty Is As Pretty Does frame at an antique sale, I had to have it. It was reasonably priced at 24.00. Sometimes “cute” is well worth it.
One of my favorite things to collect are old stitched pieces. This little vintage piece has a great message – Cheerfulness brings harmony. So true, so true. And a cheerful price for 5.00 at an estate sale.
A .50 cent hankie, a 4.00 vintage made in Japan covered jar and a 5.00 pitcher pull the vignette together. I love to casually layer things to pull colors together from different pieces.
A vintage shelf that was once in our kitchen now holds old quilts and linens. The granny square afghan was a recent purchase for 1.00. An old 1.00 ruler hangs on the side of the shelf just to add a bit of fun and whimsy. This would be great to do in a child’s room so that they could measure themselves.
Decorating doesn’t just evolve over night – unless you get everything at one shop. What fun is that? To me, decorating is about pulling bits and pieces together - old with the new - to make your home one-of-a-kind. The thrill of the hunt for a one-of-a-kind piece is much more satisfying than buying something that is trendy. Look for those things that speak to your heart and your soul. Add a special family heirloom, photos of your loved ones and use granny's old hankies and crochet. Mix it up and have fun!! Just remember there are rules to decorating - but heck, go and break them!!! Know what I mean? Be true to YOU and surround yourself with things that make your heart go pitter patter and pleases your soul.
Thank you for stopping by for a visit. Thanks to Sue for hosting REDNESDAY!!
Wishing all of you a wonderful July 4th!!

ReplyDeleteP.S. I just clicked on your inspiration house post, and couldn't believe it. I have loved that house forever! It has been in several different magazines. You did such a great job in recreating the bedrooms. My table for this Thursday's Tablescape Thursday was inspired by this house, too.
ReplyDeleteI just thought that was so neat that we were both inspired.
I also meant to tell you that I loved the sign made for you.
What a dream RED and white bedroom! I love it all...and that pretty blue bird lamp and flowered lamp shade is so cute too. I'm drooling and wondering if I could do this in my guest bedroom.
ReplyDeleteFabulous! Your guest room looks a million dollars, I just love all the beautiful little touches. Your guests must be very happy bunnies staying in such a gorgeous room.

ReplyDeleteI can't begin to tell you how beautiful I think this room is.
ReplyDeleteWell done Becky!
What a beautiful room! Love everything thing, especially the "cheerfulness brings harmony" needlepoint!
ReplyDeleteLots of sweetness going on it that very girly room. My granddaughters would appreciate it but my grandsons would probably say, "ewwww, Grammy". That's boys for you, LOL
ReplyDeleteDi
Be still my heart!! This is just the perfect bedroom. How sweet of Miss Jean to make the quilt for you. Red and white quilts are my very favorites. This room is so pretty I would just lie in the bed looking around - it would take a long time for sleep to come. Can you come help me decorate - I have a lot of great stuff, but I need a good eye to put it together.

That room makes me extremely happy! I'm all about reds and whites together. They are just the perfect pair. In fact I redid 2 hutches in red and white. They are in my craft room that I'm creating.
ReplyDeleteThis room was an inspiration. Thank you! Great job!
Have a fabulous day.
Kim
Becky, you have done an incredible job with this room! You have such an excellent eye for pulling things together. We are in the process of moving to a new(er) home, and the decorating will be so different then where I have lived for the last 30 + years.

ReplyDeleteBecky, Becky, Becky...
ReplyDeleteI am in AWEEEEEEEEEEE of this room. I love it. Why oh why you don't show us your rooms more often is beyond me because my friend you have got the gift.

ReplyDeletexoxo,
Connie
Oh honey, you did it. I hardly know what to say. "Red" you never looked better!
ReplyDeleteWow! ♥
ReplyDeleteI'm in the midst of a guest room re-do, so this was very interesting to me. The thing that stands out, from this blog and others, and from recent visits to WA is the number of thrift stores and malls - with the exception of the Salvation Army and Value Village they are almost unknown up here. Gorgeous room!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh this is the cutest room ever! It really comes together so well because you have a great eye for these things. Beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteLoved reading through this post with all your thrifty treasures! The colors are great, this room is just so sweet. I love everything about it. My own house is very neutral so I feel like I get my color fix coming to visit you!
ReplyDelete~Michelle
You guest bedroom looks like a home away from home.
ReplyDeleteRed white and blue are my favorite colors in fact those are the colors in our master bedroom.
Thanks for the great post.
Brenda:)
Oh my GOSH Becky I love your room.
ReplyDeleteYou have been a busy lady. Your
curtains are awesome and I can't
believe you got those for $4. We
don't have stores like that here.
We have thrift stores but they are
not that cheap. You can go to Walmart and buy cheaper than our
thrift stores. Hello...thrift is
the key word and they don't get it.
You gave me a terrific idea for my
sewing room. I have several rulers that my
Daddy had in his shop so I'm going to put them on my shelf that is simiular to yours. You are such an
inspiration, don't know what I would do without you Doogs and Fiona to brighten my day. Thanks!!!":O)
Your room is breath-taking. I think I would never come out. You are so talented!
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love that room.... from the bed to the chippy table...

Hi Becky,
ReplyDeleteWow, Wow and Wow! I love your guest room! It's delightful and so pretty. I could just stay in there and look at all the pretties for hours...
The quilt that Jean made for you is so priceless and so very sweet. What a dear and kind hearted friend Jean is. I just adore the red and white checked curtains what a great find. Everything in the room is just perfect and as charming as can be. It sings out with happiness, who would ever what to go home. I think your guests might never leave.
See you soon, big hugs~Elizabeth

ReplyDeleteSimply marvelous! May I go thrift store shopping with you?
ReplyDeleteBecky, I just have to say that room is pure perfection! You would never have achieved the nostalgic and layered feeling without collecting the pieces over time...that's where my downfall always comes. I love the pillows. The Pretty Is As Pretty Does frame is to die for! Love the stitchery and quilts. Truly, can I come stay?
ReplyDeleteOh, Becky! I can't begin to tell you how incredibly beautiful the room has turned out. Even more so than the last time I saw it. I'm truly humbled to be a little part it all. Well done, my dear!
ReplyDeleteOh, my! Can I come spend the night in this room? It is just wonderful! Red Gingham is my all time favorite.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cheerful, happy room!!! I love every little bit and piece!! You have such a knack for finding the cutest things and putting them all together to make the most charming rooms and vignettes! I love the "pretty is as pretty does" frame and the adorable bird lamp!! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteWow! This is amazing. You are very talented because this looks like it is straight out of a magazine! Every detail is beautiful. I love the pillows and the fabric. Everything is GORGEOUS!
ReplyDeleteI also stopped by here to let you know I received my order and I am SO happy! The banner is perfect and I am amazed at how quickly it arrived...in plenty of time for the 4th! Thank you. <3
WOW!!! That was such a fun tour of your fabulous guest room! Should be in a magazine spread, what beautiful, inexpensive treasures you found and compiled into a beautiful inspiring room.
ReplyDelete~ Violet
What a charming room that any guest would love to stay in. It's so cheery and welcoming. My favorite is the pretty frame - what a find.
ReplyDeleteTerri
OMGosh! It's amazing! I love the mirror with "Pretty is as Pretty does". I wish more girls would hear that these days!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your new room. LOVE the colors and everything makes me SMILE!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing!
Becky,
ReplyDeleteThat is so very beautiful, what a wonderful room for guests or family members to sleep and dream in. So many personal touches to soothe the soul and inspire decorating choices. I am thinking M E would be proud!! Maybe you should invite her to spend the night ;)
Janet@Housepeepers
I do not know why you looked to BH&G for your inspiration. THEY need to be looking at YOU. How do you ever get your guests to leave? That is one of the cutest, most thoughtful-put-together, sweetest, charming rooms in all of blogland. Wonderful. Every single last detail!!
ReplyDeleteLori L
SIGH...... My dream bedroom...that is what I think of when I see and have read everything here in this post....oh my!!!!!!! Just beautiful. We have the same bedskirt..mine also from salvation army..how neat!!
ReplyDeleteLordy! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I just "finished" our guest room. I have the same shabby valance action going on... also did 2 sets of sheets. It adds so much. But I might have to copy some of your other ideas! :) Our guest room is all blues though. I'll be doing a post as soon as I get some art work going on one wall.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the Pretty is as pretty does! My mom used to always tell me that.:) That was worth every penny!:)
~Liz
This is absolutely, POSITIVELY my style! I adore the quilt. I may have to do some talking to your friend who made it. It's so very special. I love your decorating style. It's eclectic and charming and oh, so very cozy! My hat goes off to you with this room.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Just gawgeous, Sweetness! I love your beautiful bedroom and all those pretty pillows! We don't get really good deals around here at thrift stores. I have to go to other towns to get a bargain! :)

Your home is so beautiful, and I love that you decorate with thrift and antique store finds! And so many special touches too, like the Roses are Red pillow, and that Pretty Is frame. I've been a reader/lurker of your blog for a few years now, and I still get a thrill every time I visit!
ReplyDeleteHappy REDnesday and Happy 4th!
Carol~~Old Glory Cottage
Oh Becky, your room is so cheery! I love what you've done and how you tell us how you put it together. You have a marvelous eye. But I have to tell you the thing that is drawing my heart is the frame that says, "Pretty is as pretty does." My dad always said that and he continued saying that to all the granddaughters too. My dad passed away in Sept. of 08 and I miss him so much and that sweet little frame just brought him back for a moment. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThis has got to be my most favorite post yet! REALLY!! I think I've been back to see it about 5 times today, and each time I'm just drawn in, wishing I had just a pinch of your talent. Oh Becky what a beautiful room. I loved it. Thanks for sharing. Have a Blessed Week,
ReplyDeleteSherry
Becky, Your guest room is simply gorgeous. I'm inspired to redo my guest room in these colors. They're so bright and cheerful!
ReplyDeletePatricia :o)
I'm not a red and white person. I'm definitely not a gingham person. I don't love stuff 'squished' together on tables. There is just so much about this room and adds up to most everything I hate.
ReplyDeleteHowever, this is the most adorable room I've seen in a long time. It doesn't try too hard. It flows and it's warm and inviting in a low key way that allows one to take their shoes off and jump on the bed.
I love every corner of this room and every item in it. You did a wonderful job of editing.
I just had to tell you that you took all my 'no' things and turned it into a perfect 'yes'.
You are surely talented. Thanks for sharing.
Your bedroom looks amazing, Becky! I love everything about it :)
ReplyDeleteI am so happy after taking your advice and having an afternoon break by visiting your beautiful room makeover. It is simply soul-inspiring!!! I love red and white...and gingham...mixed with that sky Lauren blue. Oh my!!!!! A beautiful post once again from your pretty blog/
ReplyDeleteI just love your guest room!! So pretty and inviting!! I have loved the house that you got the inspiration from for a while now...and now I can add this room to my list too.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love it!!
~Cindy~
The room looks so pretty! My heart skipped a beat when I saw that little alarm clock on the bedside table. I had the same one next to my bed growing up. It woke me up all through school! It finally broke, and I don't know if we threw it out or gave it away, but that little photo sure brought back memories. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I got it when I was young, probably about 8 or 9, and I'm turning 50 this summer, just in case you wanted to know how old it is :-)
Blessings,
Marcia
fabulous room! loved the great idea for the bed skirt. my beds are too high for a standard skirt. I've used cafe curtains or valances.
