...and the story begins like this...
Some of you may have already discovered this lovely book by Molly Hyde English, but for those of you who have not......well, let me tell you it is a real treat. I have another one of her books that I shared HERE and always love revisiting it for some smiles and nostalgic cheer.
Molly has featured many coastal cottages from the northern California Monterey Peninsula - some of my favorite places in our state.
As soon as I opened the cover, I knew this was going to be a beautiful book. I love the acorns and oak leafs! So come along.....flip through just a few pages with me. So many of YOU came to mind as I was looking through this book!!! (funny how we do that, huh?)

I love all the dog stuff!!! Every itty bitty bit of it! I love that garden path and the cottage feel of it. Aaaahhhhhhhhh!
ReplyDeleteThe old wooden chairs with the metal can flower pots with the red ticking pillows casually tossed about......the porch. It invites you to come and sit a spell and have a glass of tea........... that is just what I want my porch to look like....... I will keep this picture to fashion each detail when we build my porch!
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful pictures........
Hope your summer is peaceful...... I miss all my blog friends........
Wow what wonderful eye-candy. I think I like the picture with the red striped cushion in the background and the old metal milk bottle holder. The darling swanky swing in the foreground. Thats my favorite!!
ReplyDeleteI have to tell you every time I visit your Blog and see that smile on that handsome son of yours it makes me smile. I lost a step son two years ago, Jeremy he was a real sweet soul. Hugs, Diane

Hi Becky, thanks for shareing that great book. I've put it on my birthday list. The photo with the boots and all the things hanging from the shelf is probably most like me ~ lots of color and lots of stuff! I love the vintage dog pieces too. I've been trying to find them but they tend to be pricey. I did find a Labrador lamp at Marshall's recently, made my day!
ReplyDeleteDawn
I love looking at books such as these over and over. You always find something you missed the time before. Nice find.
ReplyDeleteI am going on Amazon right now to see if I can find a copy! What a lovely book! Little Miss Fiona has grown into a beautiful girl. I love the photo of doogs in your side bar he looks like hes really thinking about something, could it be dinner! lots of love, sorry I have not left a comment in a while, I do pop in for a visit, Jane xxx
ReplyDeleteThis is one of those books I could flip through over and over again and savor with a cup of tea. I must get myself a copy! Thanks for providing the link. It's hard to choose a favorite picture, as I love all things vintage and all things cottage. The gardens are heavenly and I could so picture myself in the yellow room with all the cushy furniture and vintage china.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos in this book...Sooo many favorites. Sitting on the porch swing looks pretty relaxing about now! I hope you're having a great weekend. ~Natalie
ReplyDeleteLovely photos and such charming touches in the rooms. Thanks for sharing it. I will be looking out for it.

Oh Becky..I am beside myself with excitement! I can't wait to sit down and browse through this book! I am loving the style of the cabins with the stone fireplace and the one that says cabin tourists over the fireplace. Thanks for finding the book and sharing!!
ReplyDeleteI love them all but the stone footpath really intrigues me. I just feel I have to follow to see where it leads...and I know it'll be something cottagey and wonderful! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Becky,
ReplyDeleteI'll have to say I identify with the red striped cushions, on the wooden bench with a bucket of flowers. I love entertaining outside.
My taste combine shabby, cottage and rustic. If a fabric is fading (or even has a small hole in it), a painted item is peeling or rubbed away, or a metal item has some rust showing, then I'm your gal!! I tell people I love things that other people have loved and used. And I collect buckets, enamel items and brooms, along with Scotties...............
Thank you for sharing this beautiful book.
xo

I DO, chickee!!! I just ordered the book on Amazon. My favorite photos is of the flowers in the buckets by the old chairs. Adorable.
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Connie
I love these pics you posted!! I especially loved the garden pics (but I am all about the garden in the summer). Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI just saw this book at a shop in Sweetwater! Now I need to head back and get it! Yes, I love vintage!
ReplyDeleteFunny exchange last week
Me-I love antiques, anything vintage.
Other person-I don't like antiques but I love vintage!!!
Blessings, Misha
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI am so happy that I happened to visit your blog this morning - I adore vintage cottages and am rushing out to purchase Molly's book. I believe that the cottage on the cover belongs to Jane Elliott who was a wonderful water color artist who lived in Newport Beach, Ca. I am also an artist and spent many happy days visiting her and painting in her studio. I knew that her cottage had been photographed by Molly, however, Jane passed away and I did not realize that the book had been published.
Thank you for sharing the delightful book. Have a wonderful week.
Blessings, Erin
I adore vintage!!! Hadn't seen this magazine. so glad you shared. I think the photo of the porch swing with the quilt is very nice, but I like all the views.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are doing well.. I visit often, just don't comment as often as I should. You are in my thoughts and prayers.. sending hugs your way.
That looks like a wonderful book. I wish I could buy several houses. A vintage cottage, a farmhouse, a country French manor, a rustic mountain cabin, a Scandinavian cottage and a beach or lakeside cottage. I love all of those styles. It is so hard to just stick to one!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Penny
Hi Becky, what a dreamy magazine....I love it and I love vintage too. My style? I saw little bits of me in several pictures...hugs, Linda

ReplyDeleteI have this book and love it! I think there is a little bit of me in every photo - some one thing or a whole vignette...
ReplyDeleteNow I am going to have to pull it out again and look through it!
Wonderful looking book! Thanks for featuring it, Becky. Number 5 looks a lot like my style (only better)...ha!
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful book...I don't think I need to buy it now that you've shown it off so well! Gorgeous!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteHi Becky :)
ReplyDeleteI think I could just crawl into that room with the blue table and be very happy ;)

ReplyDeletePatricia :o)
You know I love vintage! I'm going to have to get this book. Love her style. Thanks for sharing sweet Becky!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Lisa
Oh my GOSH! I have this book, and pulled it off the shelf yesterday, was reading it last night!
ReplyDeleteI love all the dogs in so many of the cottages -- it gives them the right "feel" -- lived in, loved, USED.
So many of these cottages remind me of the summerplaces (that's what we used to call them) that most of my relatives had when I was a girl. Secondhand furniture, old printed bark cloth, hammocks and Adirondack chairs, warm wool blankets for cold summer nights -- I remember we had quilts we called "bonecrushers" at our summerplace on Long Island -- the inside of the quilt were old Navy blankets of my Dad's from WWTwo. Wow they were heavy.
Yes... I have enjoyed this book. Maybe I should pass it on in a giveaway, so someone else can enjoy it! (Sorry to write so much -- got excited when I saw the book!)
Cass

I'll have to look for that book! I think I'd like it! Well the room with the yellow walls was my favorite. I have yellow walls and I see there's even a dog painting on the wall - that's so me!
ReplyDeleteManuela
Huuummmm .... Which is closest to my style???? Probably the picture of the yellow living room... the one after the cute red galoshes. This book looks like I might need to own it. :)
ReplyDelete~Liz
I love the cottage style books..I spend hours looking through them.

Well you know I love vintage:>) I was drawn to the photo with the red boots and the straw bag hanging on pegs, Ooh, and the red striped pillows on those weathered chairs. I'll be lookiong for this next time I'm at the book store browsing with a cup of coffee:>)
ReplyDeletemy favorite is the one with the lemondade....i love the vintage glass and the fabrics and i could see myself sitting there drinking that lemonade with this book in my lap!
ReplyDeletehave a wonderful day~

I adore vintage and I wish so much that my home was a "cottage". I am going to my local book store to see if I can find this book! It looks like I will enjoy it. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOh I must have this book! Yes I love vintage! I just built a new home and when we decided to move and purchased the lot by our daughter I knew that I wanted a home that was new but looked old. So we built a 1930's craftsmen style home and I'm always looking for vintage stuff to go inside and out.
ReplyDeleteYes, I truly love all things vintage! I will put this book on my reading list.
ReplyDeleteI love that book, but still haven't bought it. I look thru it every time I run across in a bookstore. Guess I ought to "come clean" and just buy it, huh?
ReplyDeleteJanet @ Housepeepers
Becky, the book is fantastic. I have to admit I am a bookaholic. You just can't have too many , can you? I saw so many things I loved in the photos. I am a sucker for a great porch. You just can't beat vintage...... I love it.
ReplyDeletejean in Virginia
What a delightful book. Yes, yes I love vintage! The two photos that really grabbed me were the one with the red and yellow quilt on the swing and the red pillow and cherry glass vignette. Red grabs me every time. Then there are the photos with dog anything in them.... I could sure see your own cottage featured in a book like this!
ReplyDeleteYou asked where was Oliver during our 'inspection.' He was sleeping under the vanity while we worked. He informed us he is retired and leaves any work to the younger generation ;-)
Hugs to you and the gang!
Lallee
Becky, Im also a "vintage" lover. I think my style would be the relaxed living room with the fireplace, second being as many said the striped pillows on the porch. I love casual and functional. Thanks so much for sharing so many of the pictures with us.... Julie in Holland...
ReplyDeleteI love vintage. It was hard to choose but I think my favorite pic is the one with the rubber boots and the bag. I love those colors together. So bright, cheery, and garden-y!
ReplyDeleteI love vintage...I married him! teehee....but I love the flag walk through the garden, it reminds me of my sisters garden. Love the book!

Oh I so agree! Cheers to Vintage Cottage! That book looks so pretty. Thanks for sharing it. laurie
ReplyDeleteOh I would love to have this book. Thanks for troducing it and sharing the photo's. I love the photo's. I'll have to put it on my Christmas wish list.
ReplyDeleteHave a Blessed Week,
Sherry
Hi Becky,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great book!. I will look for one to add to my collection of decorating books. I love all vintage style. It just seems to comfort me I think maybe because what we are calling vintage now is what I grew up with. (I must be old).
A fun post.
Take care and enjoy your day,
Elizabeth
I LOVE vintage ♥ Vintage Cottages looks like an amazing book ~ thanks for the sneak peak Becky. Carmel CA is on my "travel wish list" :-) Love the photos of the white porch swing, the wrought iron staircase with handpainted tiles & the garden path!
ReplyDeletethe pine-walled rooms and the front porch swing would be my favorite places; they remind me of my granny and her love for our family. i can almost smell those walls and hear the creaky chain holding up the swing as it sways in the summer breeze...i used to sit in one like it while shucking corn, popping peas, singing COKESBURY hymns with my granny as we waited for the breezes to blow in the days of no air conditioning....mmmmmmmmm!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore vintage cottage style... We put in a stone walkway so our house would look more cottagey last summer. The picture of the walkway really jogged my memory about that. This year we built a picket fence around our vegetable garden in our back yard for the same reason. Looks like my kinda book.
ReplyDelete♥, Susan
That looks a delightful book; thanks for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteI do so love to leaf thru books like that. So in answer to your questions....me me me. :) xo Lynn
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't mine, but I'm tagging you to play this game:
ReplyDelete1) open the folder that has your pet pics in it
2) choose one you haven't posted before
3) tell its story
4) tag 5 friends
Bonnie
I've had that book for awhile and I love it! I'm partial to the little cottages in Carmel. I grew up in San Luis Obispo and my husband's parents retired to Cambria so it reminds me of home. Since we're trying to landscape I love that pic of the flagstone path on the grass. Mimi
ReplyDeletemy great niece, 2 1/2yo Katie, needs extra prayers ...
ReplyDeleteshe's going to the OR today @ 2PM (cleaning infection from her heart-surgery chest incision)
Thanks for keeping her in your prayers...
...I can't believe this post, but I checked this very book out of the library today!!!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT

Love the book. I think it is great to see all the different types of cottage style and they are all so different. English cottage, Irish cottage, French cottage etc. Lovely
ReplyDeleteI ADORE cottage vintage!!! It is so cozy and homey. I love old photos - my house is full of them! I also love antique dog collectibles, pictures, books, etc. I have a bunch of Scottie dog things, too! I JUST bought that same book! It's wonderful! Check out my blog www.thehandleybungalow.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThanks for your great blog - I always enjoy reading it! Sincerely, Ann
oooh, I must get that one!
ReplyDeleteLove all of the inspiration - thank you Becky for sharing!!!

ReplyDeleteI'm drawn to "vintage" too, but not, perhaps, for the reason decor magazines wax eloquent over it. Vintage as a style motif misses the point, to my unrefined tastes. I know I show my age to opine that "old" was better made, but as a woodworker and cabinet maker I know it is actually true: vintage tools and vintage houses feature joinery and materials not found today. Vintage hand tools are far superior in their quality of materials and parts and longevity to today's mass market clones. And today's throw-it-together contractor building houses is a joke compared to cottages and houses built with care and great attention to detail back in the "craftsman" era in the first quarter of the 20th century.
But 'old' is not the best part of "vintage" to me. What makes a tool or a cottage or a marriage "vintage" to me is when much and frequent touching of the object becomes so familiar it touches me in a way that is not transferable to any other tool or house or spouse. Vintage means I and what I've come to praise as "vintage" have grown old and comfortable together.
That has nothing to do with style, and everything to do with soul-making and a shared journey ... but this true "vintage" is what decorators mistakenly attempt to market as a 'look.'
Joseph Harvill, publisher Great Scots Magazine
Meeeeeee :) I lOVE Vintage :)
ReplyDeletelol, it was way to hard to pick just one, because each and every one I adore, But I love the swing and the red cushion, milk bottles etc, but they are all fabulous!
