Keeping Old Time

One of my favorite things to collect are vintage clocks - even if they don't work. I don't know why I am so attached to them, but there is just something about the shape, the colors, patina, the little bells at the top...just what is it that draws me in?

It could be my memory of my Nanny's mantel clock that she proudly displayed on her mantel. The faithful chiming on the quarter hour and then the proud dong - dong - dong - that echoed boldly within the wood vessel, letting you know what hour it was for that day.

It could also be that I loved my little plastic fru fru clock that sat on the night stand in my bedroom. White plastic with a dainty filigree edge that was painted gold. Little flower decals along the base made it even more girly. Each night I wound it up before tucking myself in. I'd fall asleep listening to the subtle tic-tick-tick-tick.

The clocks I do have now are mostly round faced - some gold, silver, black, with and without rhinestones. They do speak to me - even though they may be without a sound now.

The first three photos are of my collections. The last two are from June 2007's Decorting Flea Market Style. I found it quite interesting that the old clock was used as a ceiling medallion. What a wonderful to look UP time!

  3. Becky,
I also collect clocks and most all of them are Big and Baby Bens. For me it makes me remember my sweet grandmother and her clocks she wound every night.
I have 2 of the very same ones as you and I don't remember ever seeing one with rhinestones, how cool is that.
I have a long shelf over my kitchen sink and most of my collection is up there.

  8. Hi Becky,

Recovering from yesterday. I love that first picture with the mirrors, tole trays, etc. I have a little green cabinet very similar to the one in the picture. Is that from your house? I love clocks too, but only have a couple. I just can't start another collection...well, maybe.

  9. Hi Becky. I have a thing about old clocks too - especially the kind that have to be wound up. I LOVE that tick, tick, tick... hubby not so much though. Blessings... Polly (p.s. I've "oopsed" about 10 times today much worse than yours)

  10. I love clocks for displays~such personality. I have been on the look out for small ones like you have, but no luck yet. I have a small round one that no longer works that belonged to my grandparents. It needs some little friends, I think. I always adore all your vignettes. You have the magic touch, Becky!

  11. As you know I love clocks too. I adore the ticking and the graphics. I was JUST looking at the pic of the big clock on ceiling in my old mag. Very cool. I must say the way you have yours displayed is better than the mag pic! Beautiful! xoxo, cherry

  14. Loved all the pictures of your clocks. I really love the mirrors in the first picture - I have that same lampshade in blue! I wanted pink, but it is in the guest room which I tried to make somewhat gender-neutral.
