1-2-3….Three Projects Done

I’ve been working on a few projects this week to take into the shop. Boy it feels good to get projects done, right? Hubby will be happy for that being as the house looks more orderly. (smile, hubbers…I know you are reading this!)

The first project up my sleeve was to un-funky-fy an old handmade wood side table. Pretty homely in its original state, I must say. I painted the table with Annie Sloan Chalkpaint – in Duck Egg & Old White. I stenciled numbers along the edges using pure black stencil paint. Next, I applied one application of a medium stain paste wax, a little light sanding along the edges and, lastly, a final application of a plain paste wax. Allow to dry and give it a light polish with a clean cotton towel.

Project one, done. Check.

This old wooden box – maybe an artist’s box – was all beat up and in dire need a fresh coat of white paint.

Yes, Miss Fiona, that is Annie Sloan’s Old White that you are looking at AND it is NOT edible. Sorry girlfriend. Her eyes melt my soul…. Yes, I said NOT edible and NO, I am not painting the inside. After a light paste wax and sanding, the piece was priced and put in the shop. It would make a cute display box, too. The little drawer (below) can be pulled out and used to put small items in.. …and the back to perhaps slide in old family photos, books, what-have-you’s.

Project two, done. Check.

A really ugly pair of shutters with green and white paint got a free make-over from the make-up artist (moi). The color palate, once again, Duck Egg and Old White. A little roughing up the edges and we have a pretty little pair of shutters all fresh and ready to adorn someone’s home.

Project three, done. Check.

Let’s see what else I have to do now…

Plenty.

The Color Of Love

Hello everyone! Well, I’m not feeling too yippy skippy today and thought I could use a virtual pick me up through the internet. Red always gives me that endorphin fix – well, not quite that much – not like running five miles – but it just makes me happy. And the part about running five miles, that is history. Not with my gimpy back. But I so miss running.

Most of the photos are, once again, from Pinterest. I swear, I really don’t sit at the computer all day and look at pictures. Golly jeepers, I’d get nothing – and I mean NOTHING done around here for sure, for sure.

Of course, ya might recognize the heart below. I made this for Hearts For Jack that was a sweet and loving gesture orchestrated by my sister-friend, Kim (Daisy Cottage Blog). Some of you may remember the story, but if not, just click here to read about it. Be prepared for a good cry……

Here are some lovely photos with red – maybe to cheer you up if you are feeling blah today. Now take a close look at this kitchen – look up, look down, look all around. Are you loving it? It is the iconic white kitchen equipped with a restaurant sized gas stove and island. Check out those paprika colored floors! Just the perfect pop of color. Loving that fabric under the sink, too.

And this perky little number below has my brain thinking how cute it would be with folded quilts inside – behind the glass, of course, so all the world could see.

We have a red door on our home and I love it. Red says welcome to my home….or, hey, the door is over HERE! Kidding….but a red door does make a statement in a lovely way. Red is such a happy color. happy……

And speaking of making a statement, you probably could find this house if you are lost in a snow storm…. just look for the red house on the hill! Cannot miss it!! Not even with blinders on.

Six…no, I give you a ten for cuteness, Mr. House. Who lives behind your white framed windows? I spy two African Violets on your window ledge. I bet you are just as pretty on the inside as you are on the outside.

Well, this is it for my red post. I think I will find me an apple to eat – perhaps to make me feel better. Not much else sounds good. Definitely one way to lose weight. Today I will stay in my jammies and watch some television – something I don’t do too often. But trust me, I’d rather be kicking it at the sewing machine! Have tons to make before our big store event in March. Some Sophie’s Bloomer bags and Hobo Bags are in the plan, as well as some pretty pillows. So Miss Deb, if you are reading this post, I am going to make some purses. :)

Farmhouse Finds

Today I did a little window shopping and wanted to share with you some wonderful finds as well as some lovely blogs that offer a lot of inspiration. You may already know Beth and Linsey, but if not, you are in for a treat.

Let me first introduce you to Beth – an avid junker who has an eye for cool vintage items that are perfect accents for a farmhouse or cottage style home. She made the pillow above and the next two items are available on her etsy site. I made it easy, just click on the photos to drive you to your desired destination! The gas is cheap, too!!

I realllllllly like this old egg crate! Super funky-fied, huh? Beth has an ETSY shop and sells at a store in Marshville, NC. She also maintains a lovely blog titled Old Tyme Marketplace.

The next lovely lady that I would like for you to meet- if you haven’t already had the pleasure of doing so - is Linsey, the beauty behind the blog: The Farmhouse Porch. Linsey is a young momma to two adorable daughters. She loves vintage items and uses them to lovingly decorate her home.

New Old Things

One of my favorite things to collect are old cardboard and paper covered books. Nicely worn spines, tattered covers – all in shades of black and brown. Stacked imperfectly one on top of the other. Add a pair of old reading glasses and their black case on top of the stack to finish the vignette.

Another favorite collection are small old Bible and prayer books with black covers. The two in this photo are recent finds – both are prayer books – one in English and one in French. It’s ok that I don’t speak French, right?

The antique metal boudoir lamp is another recent find. It is so dainty and pretty with creamy flowers and apple green leaves, which pulls the colors from the chandelier and table in the dining room. The little light actually flickers and adds a special touch to the room at night.

Oh dear…..I spy a burnt bulb in the chandy!

Farmhouse Tables

After a long day out on the farm, it is nice to come home to a hot supper, belly up to the table, and eat till your heart and tummy are content. And a must have for any farmhouse is a sturdy farmhouse table to have hearty home cooked meals served from.

This morning's farm excursion is another trip through Pinterest. I hopped on my tractor for a cruise around the website – a cup of hot steaming coffee in one hand and the other hand on the wheel. No wind today to whip me out of my seat. Actually the sun is out – looks like a nice day!

There are so many versions of the farmhouse table – some long enough for eight chairs and smaller ones to seat four. Back in the day these tables were used for other things other than eating at. My good friend, Doris (Dogwood Designs) has a wonderful farm table in her kitchen that her daddy used to cut meat on. Her daddy was a butcher by trade. There is a split down the table that the blade would run down. I loved hearing the story behind her cherished possession that nobody else in her family even wanted. Unbelievable, but true! After much cleaning, it is now the focal spot in her adorable farmhouse kitchen. (Maybe Doris will allow me to take photos of it soon to share on here).

I love the tranquility that the room above exudes. Soothing creamy shades with just a pop of green hear and there. Casual at best with mismatched chairs and simple dishes to eat from.

The table below reminds me a bit of my dining room table because, to me, it looks more like a desk. This kitchen isn’t all white either … thinking of you girls who don’t like all white furniture.

I am looking for a farm table to replace my table that I currently have in the dining room. My table is actually from a post office and has apple green legs and a galvanized top.

It will make a great desk for my computer. But for now, it will do. No rush…I like it just fine….

....that and my small collection of ironstone.

All of a sudden I am craving biscuits and gravy with a side of crispy bacon! Anyone have a good biscuit recipe?

I’ve Got Me A Tractor!

(I can hear my Gramps strongly urging me to keep BOTH hands on the steering wheel and STOP taking pictures when driving!)….crazy blogger, I know. A girl has to have some craziness in her life….well, sometimes. right? right.

So whatever you do today, take a moment to smile and laugh.

Designing A Farmhouse Kitchen

More dreaming here in my head. I’ve shared with you already that I would love a farmhouse and just what would my dream farmhouse look like inside?

For starters, lets start in the heart of the home – the farmhouse kitchen – where delightful meals are made.

All of these photos are from Pinterest and each one has bits and pieces that I love, like this chunky wood island below. Every kitchen should have an island for guests to sit at and visit whilst the cook goes to town at the stove. Right? Or just sit and linger with a cup of coffee and a warm piece of apple pie ala mode.

I like that there are pops of color in this kitchen with the jadite cake plates, pink fridge and blue chair. A funky mix with an old feel. I also like the two chandeliers in the kitchen and the tin ceiling.

Other must haves would be a farmhouse sink…..

….and plenty of open shelving.Wood floors?

Or tile?

Or even used bricks? Now this option would be super easy for clean up and would hide dirt pretty easy. Your thoughts?

Farmhouse Dreams, Round Two

So today I got up early and downed three cups of coffee off the get go. It’s cold outside and I had plans of going to an estate sale, but who wants to pull themselves out from under a pile of quilts when it is so cold outside? Besides, Fiona was all snuggly warm next to me and wanted belly rubs. Sweet moments like this make me smile and want to stay home.

Instead of heading out, I thought it was best to see what other Farmhouses were out there to look at. Instead of hitting the real estate pages in Missouri, I went on Pinterest.

Let’s go on a little drive around the countryside today, via the web. You can even wear your jammies and wooly slippers if you like.

In my last post I shared that my dream farmhouse would have a picket fence… …a large porch and roses. I do think that these would suit my fancy just fine.

I even love the old French farmhouse here. Though not a white clapboard home, it exudes that cozy farm feeling. If I close my eyes, I can hear birds chirping and the sounds of cows in a pasture a stone throw away.

But wait, I hear a neighbor’s car alarm going off instead.

Dreaming Of Farmhouse Living

Before I begin, I have the song to the TV show “Green Acres” stuck in my head while I write this! If you are my age, you will know what I am talking about.

When I was a kid I spent a lot of time at my aunt and uncle’s dairy farm that was in a rural location in a small town in California. Though some might think that a dairy has it’s funky smells, there was just something magical about being there. Days were long and filled with romping around and climbing on fences – and even being lured by my mischievous cousin to jump down in a certain part of the pen – only to my astonishment to have it be cow manure that had hardened on top but was extra gushy underneath. My aunt was not pleased when I walked into her house with wet cow dung up to my fanny, but she did have a good laugh on me!

Owning a farmhouse has been a dream of mine for years. Nothing fancy schmancy, just a white wood sided house with a front porch that is nestled on a plot of land – enough land to have a vegetable garden, tons of flowers, some goats and domestic white geese. (No cows this time though).

So I sat at my computer with my coffee this morning and googled farmhouses for sale in Missouri. Why Missouri? Oh, no reason. I do remember flying over Missouri years ago and, while descending down to the airport, looked down on some wonderful farms with ginormous houses. So today we take a virtual trip to some Farmhouses in the Mid-West.

Love this stairway! I could just see this house freshened up with some white paint….

….to look fresh like my favorite farmhouse of all time.

This is one of my favorites. Such sweet bones and it has even been updated. Though not a fan of the dark cabinets…

…it does have a lot of light and could easily be transformed with a can of white paint to look more like the Better Homes and Gardens kitchen/dining room below.

Another grand dame with a fabulous porch, wide steps, and columns.

Just look at these stairs and the natural light from the window. Now if you look rather closely, you will see a red-roofed cottage wallpaper. That would definitely have to stay.

This is the backyard with a storage building that the hubs would L-O-V-E. The doggies would love to run around on that grass, too.

Now imagine, if you will, make a stone path to the right of the building that will lead you to the patch of grass just beyond the trees in the foreground. On this patch of grass have a lovely table, like below, sitting there for garden parties.

Are you with me?

Another beauty with a nice covered porch.

There is potential there, for sure, AND a porch swing.

For the 4th of July, string patriotic buntings along the porch, add some white wood rockers with red buffalo checked pillows and sip on sweet tea as you wave to the neighbors walking by.

Just add a white picket fence with a rusty and funky old bike out front…

…..or even add an arch with greenery along the front path.

Of course there would have to be several rose bushes for fresh bouquets.

This is a charming farmhouse we found that was for sale in Northern California a few years back. The iconic sweet farmhouse…

..with a porch, a swing, fresh flowers..

…a picket fence and a welcoming garden path to greet visitors.

Should my dream of owning a farmhouse ever come true, my other dream would be to have Sarah Richardson design the inside. Why not dream big? I love her style so much! And she looks like a fun gal to hang around with, too.

How To Make A Paper Garland From An Old Book

Need a fun project to do while sitting at the TV? I have made these garlands before – only in a smaller version – and draped them on a Christmas tree and used them as a center piece down a table. They are a lot of fun to make and add an unexpected flair to any room, bridal shower, wedding or fun event.

For the project you will need:

An old book – about an 8” x 11” – that you don’t mind cutting up and has about 350 pages.

Jute twine

Scissors

Hole punch

To make your paper garland, choose an old book that you won’t mind cutting up. The book I used was the size of a dictionary (about 8” x 11”) -

and had interesting graphics, old fact charts and nicely aged paper.

To make it easy to remove the pages from the book, tear away the outer spine of the book as well as the hard cover.

Next, cut the pages in half.

Fold the cut pages in half again.

To make the garland less balanced and perfectly square, I fold the pages in an imperfect half – kind of caddywhompus, if you will - as shown below. Using a hole punch, punch a hole a bit off center, about an inch up from the fold. Give the pages a little crumble along the edges for a rumpled look. Cut a piece of twine the length that you would like the garland to be. String the pages on the twine. Once the pages are on the twine, give them a little turn here and there so that they are not perfectly lined up.

When done, tie a large knot in the twine at both ends, leaving about 12” of twine at each end to use to hang the garland by. Depending on the look you like, the garland can be made with the pages tight together, as my garland is, or stretched out at bit with more spacing in between the pages. Drape it… ..or let it hang straight down. Just have fun with it! Don’t be discouraged if the pages tear a bit as you are making it. Nobody will know but you when it is all done.

The garland would be really cute made out of a colorful illustrated children’s book with some pretty scrapbooking papers added here and there. too.

Talent Runs Deep….

….over at The Green Pea! If you follow my blog closely, you may recall that I have shared about my friend Sandi’s antique store several times on this blog. Sandi is quite talented in so many ways and her talents are visible as soon as you walk into her store. Not only is the building old and historic, but she has it decorated to the “T!”

Mr. Green Pea – the man behind the scene – is quite the carpenter and can build anything! All that Sandi has to do is show Mr. Pea a picture and he can build it, like this amazing shelf unit. Sandi had seen one similar to this one in a Restoration Hardware catalogue, showed her hubby the photo and he constructed this unit – and it is so much nicer than the RH’s piece! Solid wood shelving, antique cast iron fittings and wheels give this unit an industrial look. Sandi sanded the wood and applied several coats of paste wax to finish it off.

It is a large piece that would be the perfect addition to a family room or even a kitchen. I can envision it in a loft setting, filled with books and collectibles.

Awesome job, Mr. and Mrs. Pea! Keep up the great work! You both are sooooo talented!!!

Beautiful Inspiration

When I dream of a room that would evoke peace and calm, I think of a room done in soothing blues, creams with subtle pops of green.

I found this wonderful website, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles,

and

fell

love

with these rooms that were designed by Decorator Phoebe Howard. Though the home is contemporary, she added old pieces to mix in with the new... …like the placement of the vintage camera on top of a small stack of books. I like the balance and symmetry here with the mirror that pulls your eye upwards and then back downwards to the stabilizing piece, the old wooden table. A beige background with pops of green in the pillows, the wallpaper & matching curtains and the darker shade of green in the bedside lamp make the look more organic. I love all of the texture and the mixture of wood tones. My favorite thing about this room is that wonderful chandelier. It has such pretty curves that look like a flower. Now notice how the shades of the bed, lampshades, carpet, side table and linens all meld together and then the pops of rust at the end of the bed match that of the flowers in the vase. Little decorating details like this allow the eye to move around the room – focusing first on the cubes then over to the bedside table. Do you see how that worked? This is a wonderful website with so much information for decorating and design. So glad I found it and I hope you will take a moment to visit it, too.

gnarly….dude…..

Define gnarly:

In “Urban” terms it means radical, beyond, tubular, sweet, awesome, great, extreme – like that. Some folks think that California is all about living at the beach, riding a surf board, driving in convertibles and we all have blonde hair. Well, parts are like that – for some – but for the most part it is a diverse state. HOWEVER, my favorite place to be is at the coast. There are some totally wicked beaches, beyond gorgeous scenery and now and then you can catch some surfers patiently bobbing along the water just waiting for that totally hot tubular wave.

Basically, gnarly coolness is all around – you just have to pay attention and enjoy the surroundings….such as these old posts with corroded chains running between them along the pier……to beautiful glowing orange sunsets at the beach. White sandy beaches invite you to stroll along barefoot, relax and only wish that that moment – that place – could be captured in time, to make it last just a little bit longer.

Mild weather allows the dress attire to be that of shorts and sandals…

…and……hanging ten……in the middle of December.It is pretty cool, dude, living in Northern California. No complaints here. You can even have a bonfire and dinner at the beach – no jacket required. Just bring your favorite comfy lawn chair and maybe a long stick and a bag of plump marshmallows to roast. Good stuff here! And, as the dogs would agree, it is totally gnarly to be able to spend awesome days out and about in our lovely state. Right?

I got a hang paw on that one!

A Tummy Warming Breakfast

This recipe is so easy and all you need to do is make it up the night before, stick in the refrigerator and bake the next morning. For years I have made this for my family on Christmas morning. It is one of those comfort foods that just makes you feel all warm and happy inside. Go back for seconds? Are you kidding me?! Well, you better hurry before others get the same idea!

I made the basic version (just bread and cheese), but you can add all sorts of other things to it, like crumbled bacon, cubes of ham, diced green chili’s, olives or roasted red bell peppers – whatever floats your boat.

Baked Bread & Cheese Casserole

1 large loaf of Sourdough Bread

6 eggs

4 cups milk

2 tsp dried Mustard

1/4 tsp black pepper

1/4 pound cubed Monterey Jack Cheese

1/4 pound cubed Cheddar Cheese

Heavily grease a 9 x 13 glass casserole dish

Cut the loaf of Sourdough bread into cubes, leaving the crust on. In a bowl whisk the eggs into the milk. Add the dry mustard and pepper and stir. Cut the cheese into bite-size cubes. Place the bread into the casserole dish. Spread the cheese over the bread. Pour over the egg/milk mixture. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

The next morning, remove the plastic wrap and place the casserole into a COLD oven. Turn the oven on to 350 degrees and bake for one hour, or until the bread is a nice golden brown. Allow to sit for 10 minutes before cutting.

For a little extra, garnish with salsa and sour cream.

Looking Forward To Baseball Season!

In our family we are big time fans of the San Francisco Giants! After watching football yesterday, I got to thinking that spring training will be here before you know it – and with that baseball season! When the SF Giants won the World Series, we attended the parade for them in SF. What a FUN day it was!!!! I don’t think people stopped smiling throughout the entire parade.My father had never been to the new ball park so for Father’s Day we took him to a game there. So much fun – but ohhhh, what a windy day it was! There is something wonderful about eating ballpark food – even though it isn’t the best food for you – but hey, gotta live it up once in awhile. Hot dogs and garlic fries – oh yum!The energy at the games is lively and Lou-Seal gets the crowd going by throwing out shirts to the crowd. She makes me laugh, especially when she dances on top of the dugouts. The following photos are of the parade. The SF Fire Department started out the parade! (I get weepy when I see a fire truck!) People were everywhere

There was a sea of orange and black that day! These two doggies were decked out in their orange and black! Too cute! As the team paraded past, number ONES were held as high as an arm could extend.

Thumbs up from Freddy Sanchez, too. The players were awesome and you could really tell that they appreciated their fans.

My only disappointment for the day was that Brian Wilson – the crazy guy that he is – took off on foot and ran down the streets waving to his fans. I so wanted to see him in person! I wonder if the beard will still be there this season ---- kind of hoping not cause he has such a cute Irish face! So long

upon us, that means spring will soon be at our door. Glorious new rebirthing of trees, flowers and the warmth of the sun on our skin. My friend, Sandi, is adding touches of spring florals and collectibles to her beautiful shop. It makes me anxious for the new season to come. But till then, I will patiently wait until winter exits. The photos are all from The Green Pea – Sandi’s antique store here in Central California.

I hope you enjoyed the tour and were inspired to be thinking about fluffing your home for spring. Simple accents like the small milk bottle with a little deer moss inside and a petite bird nest on top will make any home feel like spring has sprung.

Decorating With Old Boxes and Totes

Using old tool boxes, food packing crates, berry boxes and old drawers to decorate with is so much fun! I have a passion for those old totes that have that perfectly aged look to them. My friend Sandi owns a beautiful antique store and asked me if I could do a vignette in her front side window. OH YES! and I had so much fun doing so. Her store is filled with so many wonderful OLD things so I thought I would do up a garden themed window using old boxes and totes. How easy to decorate with such FUN things to pull from within her shop!!

This old carpenter’s tote is my favorite! Just look at the metal strapping and rivets on the top.

This vignette is an old wood box that is painted white. I layered some moss, silk flowers and a little Cottage Welcome sign.

Above is an old wood tool caddy with a fabulous 40’s green color – all original with a great worn patina. It would be divine decked out with Christmas greenery and holiday doo-dads.

An old Pepsi Cola box looks good with some silk greenery sitting inside.

An antique Watkins Products sample box that is stunning. How cool to have if your last name was Watkins! My friend Karen has it for sale in her space at The Green Pea.

Use this bright yellow box for rolled up towels, magazines or even to hold toys. Turn it on its side, as shown, and hang it on a wall for shelving.

Another favorite of mine…perfectly worn and well loved at one time. Imagine a gentleman using what he had around the house to build this piece with old galvanized pipe, bits of wire and scraps of old barn wood.

This old dresser drawer is now a lovely display piece. Old green and black paint with a glass drawer pull looks perfect on top of the cottage style white dresser.

Below is the tool caddy that I found at another friend’s shop. The caddy is painted gray with red trim – perfect to hold my Christmas Santa’s and bottle brush trees.

A Simple Doily…

…can add just the right feminine touch to a lamp shade. I recently found this handmade doily at an estate sale. It has the sweetest pink crocheted roses all around the edges.

My friend Karen inspired me awhile back to simply drape a doily over a lampshade – it adds such an extra layer of detail.

In the evening the softness of the light casts a perfect glow that accentuates the beautiful handwork of the graceful little doily.

A soft feminine detail to the Home Goods lamp and shade that I found several years ago. I think it is a keeper!

A few weeks back our youngest son was hired to don Old St. Nick’s uniform and be Santa Claus at a darling boutique here in town. Within the boutique is a section that specializes in dog clothing, treats, food and other doggie related items – so cute! This was a big day for the dogs to come and sit on Santa’s lap, have their picture taken and whisper in his ear their Christmas wishes for dog bones, chew toys, stuffies and the like. Duhgall and Fiona got to sit with Santa and tell him all that they dreamt of having him bring for them. Little did they know, but he already knows – cause he lives with them! ha.

Our Home At Christmas

Hello and welcome to our Christmas home 2011! The photos take you through the downstairs rooms and then on up to the guest bedroom - one of my favorite rooms to do up for Christmas in red and white. The little feather tree holds several of our red vintage ornaments. This year I decided to have several Christmas counted cross pieces that I stitched framed. My favorite is the Woodland Santa, that is in the step-back hutch in the dining room. Come along and have a look around.....

In The Zone

At our house we get to pretty much lay around where we want. Our usual and customary chairs and sofas have blankets down on them so we don’t soil the upholstery. Though we are house dogs, we do track in dirt on our little feet when we go outside to run around and do our “business.” Today we are zoning out…catching up on our beauty rest.

We had a busy, busy weekend full of guests and we are literally exhausted. All of that petting, scouring the floor for tid-bits of food that fell off of plates and running around the house chasing balls has us worn out! Needless to say, our human parent is moving slower than usual, too. The house smells of Christmas cookies baking and scented candles. The only sound we hear is the gentle whirring of the dishwasher. Nice and peaceful for a good snooze.

Days like this are few and far between so we will take advantage of the serenity….that is until mom fires up the vacuum!

Mom will be sharing pics of our abode on Wednesday. But here is a glimpse of our scottie dog Christmas tree…our favorite of all six trees!

Our Auntie Waveny makes her own Christmas cards every year. This year she drew a feather tree that is adorned with ornaments that she has made over the years. The little scottie with red wheels is this years ornament…..we love them! You can see it on the middle of the tree, about half way down.

Revisiting My Caramel Post From 2008

Since 2008 I have made homemade caramel candies for family and friends. They are rich, smooth and buttery – hard to not eat them as they get wrapped!

Place them in traditional store bought candy boxes or add them to a vintage vase, pitcher, box, etc. Tie on a pretty bow and there you have it, a nice little gift for someone special.

Homemade Caramels

2 cups sugar

1/2 cup butter

2 cups heavy whipping cream

3/4 cup light corn syrup

Waxed paper

Butter the bottom and sides of a glass 8 inch square (2 quart) baking dish. Note: I used a rectangular Pyrex dish that was a bit larger and it worked.

In a heavy 3 quart saucepan, heat all ingredients to boiling over medium heat and stir constantly. It will take a bit of time for the mixture to come to boil but don't walk away - keep stirring. Now when it comes to a rolling boil, boil for 35 minutes - and it is spot on with the time. Stir frequently when it reaches the rolling boil. When the candy thermometer reaches 245 degrees F immediately spread the caramel mixture into your buttered dish. Cool completely - about 2 hours. I cover my caramel with plastic wrap and put in the fridge overnight to harden. Before cutting, let it sit out in your kitchen for an hour to soften up enough to cut nicely. Cut into 1 inch squares and wrap individually with wax paper.

Burnham Pudding

Many years ago my sister-in-law, Valerie, shared this recipe with me. Every recipe that Valerie has shared has been just wonderful – she is an amazing cook! For a decadent Christmas dessert, make this up in 3-inch ramekins, sprinkle with cocoa powder and add a few dried cranberries to the top and to the plate for added color.

The trick is to not over bake as it will dry out. The dessert is cake-like on the outside with a hot gooey chocolate center. ****mmmmmm******

Burnham Pudding

1 egg
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. milk
1 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. flour

note: you can replace the cocoa powder with 2 TBLSP of Baker’s chocolate that has been melted. Add the melted chocolate to the combined wet ingredients.

In a mixing bowl, combine all dry ingredients and set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, beat the egg then add the sugar and milk. Add dry ingredients to the wet. Fill greased ramekins 3/4 full and place in a large pyrex baking dish. Add water to the bottom of the pan so that it comes up about 1/2 way up the ramekin. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. The cake should be springy and the center still gooey. Serve warm topped with Hard Sauce.

ADDENDUM 12-15-11: here are two topping recipes: one with egg, one not.

Topping/Sauce

1 TBSP butter, melted
2/3 cup confectioners' sugar
1 egg - beaten well for 5 minutes
Vanilla

Mix all ingredients together serve on top of the steamed cake.

Hard Sauce: Beat until soft 5 tablespoons butter gradually. 3/4 pound box of 4X confectioners' sugar, beating until blended each time. Add 1/8 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon vanilla. When sauce is very smooth chill it thoroughly. Serves 4.

Prettying Up An Appetizer Platter

With the holidays upon us and Christmas parties to attend, why not add a punch of color to that appetizer tray that you’ve been asked to bring? Phyllo dough triangles on a white platter is just – well, tone on tone.

I have a beautiful Christmas camellia in my backyard that is pushing out dozens of bright red flowers that have a bursting bright yellow center. Why not make this the star of the show? Snip off a few flowers, back it with several freshly cut sprigs of Rosemary and tie the tiny bouquet up with twine. Place it to the side of the food on the platter.

Pretty simple and it adds a bit of holiday flare to your appetizer plate and may even turn a few heads, too.

Mixing a little old with the new adds interest in any holiday decorating. Antique loving cups filled with bottle brush Christmas trees sit on top of an old plateau mirror. Little mischievous vintage Santas add a pop of red and whimsy to the vignette. Just mix it all up and have fun decorating!

Like so many of you, boxes have been pulled out, sorted through, messes made, glittered floors vacuumed up and the end result is simple this year.

My favorite new find is the wood cabinet that is hanging on the wall. It is full of my favorite smalls and adds some warmth to our dining room. Glitter Santas mixed with red jingle bell garlands sit on top of an old white cabinet. The Victorian book helps to bring the display “up” to show off the tiny church and bottle brush tree. Old worn silver plate loving cups sit to the side and are filled with antique bobbins and rulers. No rules to decorating here – anything goes, just as long as it has the “good old feeling” to it.

Winter Whites

Looking back through some old pictures as I decorate the kitchen for Christmas. The little kitchen tree is up, but I am missing the silver plate that once was. Some pieces have been sold off, but I do have a few of them left. I think I will try to find them and put things back as close to how they use to be. Maybe even add a pretty candle stick, too. Changes are good, right?

What’s My Line?

Do you know someone who can remember every single aspect about a movie, including reciting lines from it? I am sure each one of us has a friend or family member like that.

These kind of people amaze me – I can hardly remember the title of a movie let alone what was said and by who.

Because Jim Carey movies are such a big hit in our family, I reach deep into the brain vault for some of his infamous movie lines – only because the boys loved to impersonate him so much, especially Ace Ventura, Pet Detective.

And then there is the catchphrase by Clint Eastwood’s character, Harry Callahan, “Go Ahead Make My Day” from the movie Sudden Impact. Love using that one for myself!

There is one “gotcha phrase” that is my very favorite movie quote of all time – and from one of my favorite movies in my go-to chick flick stash. Have you seen the movie Meet Joe Black? (If not, it is reallllly good). The movie came out in 1998 and starred Brad Pitt (Joe Black), Sir Anthony Hopkins (William Parrish) and Claire Forlani (Susan Parrish – daughter to William) – to name a few. To me, one of the best parts of the movie was the scene when Susan was in the helicopter with her father, William, and fiance’ Drew (Jake Weber), talking about love and relationships. William said to Susan…. “Find someone you can love like crazy and who will love you the same back..I want you to sing with rapture and dance like a dervish.”

There it is there….the perfect advice about love. I have recited this back a time or two since then.

It speaks volumes.

Awesomeness Inside a Fluted Paper Cup

Years ago my at-the-time boyfriend (who is now Mr. SCD) gave me this recipe to try out. At the time I was taking a psychology class in college and we were having an end of the semester party. Being as I wasn’t a very good cook and liked to bake, I opted to bring a dessert. I was pleased as punch that the cupcakes were well received – so much in fact that the platter emptied out in a flash.

Here’s the recipe:

Black Bottom Cupcakes

1 1/2 cup all purpose flour

1/4 cup cocoa

1/2 tsp salt

5 tablespoons salad oil

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup white granulated sugar

1 tsp baking soda

1 cup water

1 tablespoon cider vinegar

for the filling:

8 ounces cream cheese

1 egg

1/3 cup white granulated sugar

6 ounces semi sweet chocolate chips

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stir together all dry ingredients. Add all of the wet ingredients. Stir until blended. Fill 18 cupcake wrappers 1/2 full. Top each with 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese filling.

Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

When I was in high school (oh, just a few moons ago), I had an advanced English class that was taught by one of the best teachers at my school. Now that I look back, she could easily have been the mother of Harry Potter – down to the round John Lennon style glasses & a short black hair-do with severely cut black bangs.

One of my best high school girlfriends, Sandi, had such a way of writing and always used twenty dollar words in her papers. She was also very good at using a Thesaurus to find words similar to other words. I wanted to write so eloquently, as Sandi did.

An assignment was given – a big assignment with major points going toward our final grade in the class – and it was due in a week. No pressure. Oh no.

Not.

One.

Bit.

If I could only crawl inside Sandi’s head to see how her brain connected her thoughts to form the words that her pencil scribed onto the paper. (Back in those days, we did not have computers – it was the old fashioned pencil and lined paper to put our words on).

I donned my thinking cap – pulled it extra tight as if the snugger it would fit the more it would squeeze all of my creative thoughts into one little ball – to form those perfect words into sentences that were creative, thought provoking and that might actually sound intelligent. Like Sandi’s. Out came MY thesaurus, too. Page upon page I scouted out “smart” words – those five, ten and twenty dollar words that I thought might impress my teacher and get me that A that I needed to make the grade to graduate in that white robe and gold tassel – to be a lifetime CSF member!

After working through the wee hours of the morning to finish that “must be perfection” paper, I was satisfied that this was by far the best paper I had written all quarter.

A few days went by before the graded paper, with the best handwriting I could have scrawled out on the white lined paper – even at 2 in the morning, came back. Of course, she had to place it face down on my desk. Fear crept in my body – why did she do this? Was she trying to create paranoia or just trying to tease me, like leaving that last chewy chocolate chip cookie in the cookie jar to see who would be the selfish squirrel to snag it. As I looked around the classroom, I could see that other students had their papers face down, too. Ok, she’s not picking on just me…it must be a teacher control thing. The could be Potter mom told us to wait to turn over the papers and went on to give us her lecture about how disappointed she was in some of us. Oh good! Just keep putting that hot poker in my heart. It seemed like an hour went by before we could flip our graded paper over. When the red light turned to green, I hesitated. The room was filled with sighs of relief from other students and other sounds of disappointment. What would my reaction be?On the top right corner of my paper was a letter written in red ink. The letter was not the letter I had hoped for. Below the letter was a note that the tight faced teacher had written in her distinct back-slanted and very small handwriting. Further down on the page were words circled in red, more side notes, more circles, more side notes, and more circles. My paper looked like a crime scene with so much red ink on it!

My heart fell to my toes. I got a C-. Yes, just dig the knife in a little deeper with the MINUS sign. After reading the comments, tears welled up in my eyes. I had misused the words in so many “described” ways. Where was the hole for me to crawl in? This meant that I would not be getting the grade I so needed to graduate with honors. I was .5 points away from it. All because I tried too hard to write the paper using those twenty dollar words. All because I was trying so hard to be like somebody I was not.

I went home and drowned my sorrows with a half dozen chocolate cupcakes that my mom had made. My room was my retreat away from the world – and there I cried for hours. The light from the large window in my room faded to darkness and a bit later I heard my mother at my door asking me if I was ok. No words could be formed from my parched mouth. The door-knob turned and the silhouette of my mother came towards me. She sat on the ground next to me, at first saying nothing – just quiet, as if she could read my mind. I finally told her what happened. Mom understood me because she was an over-achiever, too. She had the same disappointment as I did – she was a fraction away from graduating with honors.

If only I had been myself and not tried to write in a style that was not my own. I learned that it is okay to try to better yourself, however be authentic. I learned a valuable lesson that day in the could be Harry Potter’s mother’s classroom,: a little ~~VICISSITUDE~~ change is good now and then, but keep it real, keep it simple, just be yourself. (I will stick to the 19-cent words.) Remember to give yourself credit for who you are and to use your God given gifts to be authentic. Take those gifts, talents, blessings – whatever you call them – and run with it.

Looking back, I laugh at myself. I did look better graduating in that blue robe – it enhanced the color of my green eyes – rather than the drab white, which only would have washed my freckly complexion out! Yea, I will keep telling myself that. Sandi looked beautiful walking across the stage in her white robe with the gold tassel hanging down from her cap. She always looked better in white anyways!

It Pays To Dig….

…I came upon this beautiful piece of antique red work. It is actually a pillow cover – the Victorians would cover their sleeping pillow with handmade pieces, like this one.

Perhaps someday I will make it into a pillow, but for now, it is hanging over the beautiful quilt that my friend, Jean, made.

I don’t even mind the tiny imperfections….it is perfectly sweet.

Handmade Love and Announcing The Winners

Over time I have filled this bowl with beautiful gifts given to me by friends from all over the world. You know who you are….and I want you to know how very special each gift means to me.

Cottage Style Ornaments & A Little Giveaway

This year I am participating in a Christmas ornament swap that is being coordinated by our friend Cindy (Rick-Rack & Gingham Blog). My first swap, too! It sounded like so much fun and I cannot wait to see what everyone else is making! The ornament had to be a house, hopefully with some gingham and polka-dots, and had to represent our own blog AND have the blog name on it somewhere. Oh, and it has to be cute on the back. ~~No pressure~~ Ok, that sounds doable!

Because I love the old 20’s and 30’s artwork with red-roofed cottages – and there is one on my header – these little ornaments had to have a red roof. I pulled out some favorite red fabrics, buttons and vintage trims from my ~~neglected and stuffed fabric cabinet~~ stash.

This one has a bunting under the gables. Each ornament is different in its own way – on the front…

…and on the back. To get in the name of my blog, I made a tiny little label to sew on the back. (Love that fabric copy stuff!)

A little bo-jangles and red and white twine finishes them off. I have shown five finished ornaments here, so I have a couple more to get done and mailed off to Miss Cindy this week.

Hibernation Mode

The coolness of the mornings makes me want to sink myself further under the mounds of quilts, blankets and squishy pillows – feeling quite like The Princess and The Pea. Alas the smell of coffee fills the air and beckons a lazy head to rise and shine.

Time to set the clocks back – “fall” back, as mom used to say – and “spring forward” for setting the clock forward in spring.

Gone are those long summer days and warm nights…

that seemed to linger until the moon arose to remind us that the sun bid us adieu for the day. Now that the skies turn dark sooner, it really feels like winter is soon approaching.

I feel the hibernation mode kicking in as I hear the pitter patter of the rain hitting the windows and the coolness of the house air soaking through my jeans as I type this post. Time to gather the sweaters, woolen blankets and stock the cabinet with hot cocoa, puffy marshmallows and stack up the books to read at night under that warm and cozy blankie!

Cruising Through The Antique Mall

A girl just needs a little shopping therapy now and then! Walking around an antique shop can be very serendipitous and fun at the same time. Just never know what little treasure will spark a memory of the past or, better yet, be taken home to decorate with.

As I was walking around snapping these photos, I noticed a group of young ladies (oh, about mid 20’s) and they were really loving all of the vintage items. One young lady was planning her wedding and looking for vintage things to use as props. Some hot items right now are the old Ball canning jars to use for a candy bar, old typewriters to type messages for the bride and groom and bird cages to put cards in. Loving all of the uses for vintage things!

A Fresh New Look

A fresh new life was given to some very dark, old and worn furniture pieces – some rather homely little pieces to say the very least.

I used Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint in the color Duck Egg to paint this small 1942 spindle legged solid wood table. Added some AS dark stain here and there and finished it with a clear paste wax. The little stool was given a new look, too. From drab to really pretty fab and cute!

This $3.00 child’s rocking chair had seen better days. Though I do like the look of old worn wood, I felt that if a child were to occupy the chair, it would be much softer (and fresher) to paint it so that it could be used again without the worries of obtaining an annoying splinter. Again, I used AS Chalk Paint, but this time in Old White. A few coats later, some sanding along the edges for that good worn look…

…and here it is all bright and clean!

Oh gnome! Oh gnome!

As I was cruising through the antique store the other day, I spied this sneaky little gnome in the case! Did he steal some apples from Farmer John’s tree and was running as fast as he could before his misbehavior was noticed? If he would have been caught, he certainly would encountered a very angry farmer and be charged with a misgnomeaner, indeed!

I ask myself why I am so drawn to these quirky little gnomish beings. Could it be their short and squatty bodies, their big ears or their pointed noses? Whatever it is,

I am smitten! Call them pixies, elves, gnomes – there is no misgnomer there! A very talented fellow blogger, Monica (The Happy Zombie), loves them so much she designed her own line of fabric that came out last year. Being your own boss has its advantages, however being a one-girl show means that getting the work done takes a bit more time. I do get help from the muscles in the family when it comes to the heavy stuff, thank God. And working from home means that home doesn’t always stay nice and tidy, like I prefer. Of course, blogging about the house means that y’all ONLY get to see the pretty and clean rooms, right? Not today….

NOTE: Sarah asked on the last post if I applied the dark stain before I painted. Sarah, the first step is the paint and then add the stain to the areas that you wish to darken. The nice thing about the chalk paint is that any imperfections can just be sanded off. If you think there is too much stain, then use a fine sandpaper to remove it. Play around with it and have fun!

A Fun Chalk Paint Makeover

After hearing and reading for months and months how wonderful Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint is to use, I went to my friend Lisa’s Store, Unique Boutique, and bought two cans – Duck Egg and Old White. I found this old handmade table at a garage sale and thought it would be pretty freshened up with some Old White. Though it it not necessary to sand the furniture before painting with the Chalk Paint,

…I thought it would be advantageous to do so on the top. Who-knows-what caused the worn and corroded patina to the wood, so I lightly sanded it before applying the paint. After several coats of paint, the little table, who once was an ugly duckling, turned into a pretty little swan.

I added a very light application of the dark stain to the nooks and crannies, tops and sides and then sanded it off in some sections that were too dark. All of the edges were sanded here and there to give it a used look. To finish the piece off, I added a paste wax to give it a little shine and a soft feel to the paint.

The little drawer was lined with a pretty scrapbooking paper….

…with a soft paisley print.

This little section at the base of the table would be perfect to hold rolled up bath towels, rolls of toilet paper, magazines or even cookbooks. A great piece for a kitchen, bath or even a bedroom side table.

I took the table to the store, The Antique Warehouse, that I sell at and have it displayed with cookbooks…..

….and, to the top, added a little Christmas tree with vintage potholders hung on it. (Yes, I managed to take in a little Christmas already…though it still seems too early to me).

This is another piece that I painted with Old White Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. No before photo to show you, but it was plain wood and kind of ho-hum looking. If this piece doesn’t sell, then I may have to bring it back home for my kitchen.

If you haven’t tried painting with Chalk Paint yet, then give it a try. It is water soluble and doesn’t have a strong paint smell. I even spilled some on my tile floor and it came up really good with water and a rag.

This arrangement was from Christmas 2008, when I did mostly an all vintage Christmas throughout the house. There is something very enchanting about the sweetness of these decorations. Makes me think of my childhood and sitting for long moments staring at each ornament on my grandmother’s tree.

Happy little smiles for you today…from the pixie bunch that are currently tucked safely away to be brought out again in a month or so.

Simple Christmas Crafting

In a land long ago and far away…..well, NOT that far away, but a long time ago…lived a young woman who was just married two months before Christmas. Having always loved Christmas decorating with her mother, she was looking forward to having her very first Christmas tree to decorate with her husband. They did not have a lot of money to go out and buy store bought decorations, so she opted to make her own to mix amongst the very long homemade popcorn and cranberry garlands. Also tucked in the branches of the tree were pinecones that she added glitter to. It was a humble tree, but one that she and her husband were very proud of.

The young bride sewed by hand these Yo-Yo Christmas wreaths using Christmas fabrics along with red and green polka-dot fabrics. Each night, as she watched TV alongside her husband, she hand sewed thousands of Yo-Yo’ & stuffed each Yo-Yo with a cotton ball and strung them together to form a little fabric wreath. The Yo-Yo’s were 2” in diameter, so the finished wreaths were only 2 1/2 inches in diameter.

Over the years she gave them to friends and family but still kept a few for herself. I know this young bride very well, because she is me. Each year when I pull out the little wreath ornaments, I remember our humble first Christmas tree and just smile over the memories. Little did I know, but our next Christmas would be blessed with a sweet little baby boy – and more precious memories to cherish for an eternity.

For directions on how to make Yo-Yo’s just click on THIS LINK to take you there. For making the wreath, just add a small size cotton ball to the Yo-Yo before gathering up the edges. Using a strong thread, string 14 Yo-Yo’s together and form a circle. Add a little bow and a loop to the top and there you go! Something very simple to make and you can say you did it yourself! Nothing beats something made from the heart.

A Hands Down Favorite

One of my favorite things to look for when out scouting for antiques is old restaurant ware dishes. The quality of the dishes is substantial – enough to be used over and over again to hungry patrons. The red (or often called pink) dishes are my favorites. Even though they are made from different manufacturers, they look lovely together in a grouping. Some of the companies that made the old restaurant and hotel dishes are Tepco, Syracuse, Shenango and Wallace.

Another reason that I favor the red is that the color is a nice compliment for Valentine’s Day, Fourth of July and Christmas.

And….speaking of Christmas, here is another picture to get the old Christmas decorating umph going! Many of you shared that you could not believe Christmas is up in the stores, and I could not agree with you any more! I am dragging my feet big time in getting my space at the Antique Mall decorated for Christmas (it is still warm outside for heavens sake), however I’m feverishly working on pricing some fun vintage things to sell and pulling out items to decorate the space….hence the lack in blog time.

Now if only I had these two little elves to help me out! That would be just dandy and would sure free up some time for me to relax at the computer. Till next time, have a lovely day!

Home Grown

Living in California certainly has its perks, especially since we live so close to some of the very best wineries in the world. Not only is Gallo Winery from our area, there are an abundant amount of wineries speckled all around the beautiful Sonoma Valley.

These photos are from a trip that we took several years ago, but I like to revisit them as the colors of the scenery and the memories of that day are wonderful.

Located outside of Healdsburg, California is a neat little general store that is owned and operated by the Gallo family. There you can find wonderful wines and cheeses and even a deli counter that can whip up a delicious sandwich to either take out or dine on the casual patio out front.

The store has a farmhouse feel to it…

…and there are plenty of food items to tempt you, like this Snuggle Up Chocolate Mix – a much needed item for our cooler evenings.

Chocolate and red wine are GOOD for you, too! Pezzi King winery has a wonderful red wine called Riley’s Red. Riley, a handsome Wheaten Scottie, is the mascot of the winery.

Not only are the wines outstanding, the views from the winery are gorgeous.

Doggie Do’s – An Outing For The Scotties and Friends

Oh, HELLO! Fiona and Duhgall here! How’s everyone this fine fall day? It’s a tongue waggin’ day for us – we love the cool weather!! Now, here’s maw:

If you have been following along for the past few weeks, you will know that I was blessed to be a part of the 15 women to participate in The Traveling Friendship Bag – Sadie Mae and her companions, Toto and Rufus. For more of the story, you can read about it HERE and HERE.

On our last day out Sadie Mae, Toto and Rufus went with Duhgall and Fiona to the Dog Spa to meet Judy and Angie (below). These two women take wonderful care of our Scotties and make sure that their hair is cut to perfection. Duhgall and Fiona love going there and can hardly wait to get out of the car to go in for their day of luxury.

We cannot forget to allow Mr. Cash (Judy’s Russian Wolfhound) to have his moment with the trio. He was quite interested in the toys!! Cash is so gentle and very beautiful. Just look at his eyes – such a loving dog. He melts my heart.

Time to say goodbye to Miss Sadie Mae, Toto and Rufus. It was a sad moment to tuck them away in the box and having to say so-long. But they cannot stay with me forever and are on their way to Connie at Shady Creek Lane in Washington State.

An Outing To The Green Pea Antique Store

Today’s outing will be to the Green Pea, a wonderful antique store owned by my friend Sandi. Sandi and her husband, Jim, lovingly restored the historic building over a three year period. The ambiance of the old building is perfectly suited to showcasing the ever-changing antique furniture and collectibles that are nestled in vignettes throughout the store. A little of new is mixed within the old, such as zinc chalkboards, market baskets, wicker baskets (as shown below) and women’s sweaters, jackets and scarves. Jim and Sandi are master woodworkers and like to reinvent pieces using salvaged wood and wire.

Sandi opened up one side of her shop in July so that other vendor’s can sell their wares. It is always a joy to see what everyone finds and adds to their spaces!

So, come along for a little visit! If ever you are in Escalon, be sure to stop in to meet Sandi and take in the beautiful store in person!! It is a little like stepping back in time!

As you know, Sadie Mae (the traveling friendship bag) and her companions, Toto and Rufus, are making their way around with me to my favorite shopping destinations. Here they are posing for a group shot on the counter….but our shopping days are winding down as they need to make it to Connie’s…so off they go today…a sad farewell, but it has been fun!

A Unique Boutique Visit

A new day, a new outing with Sadie Mae, Toto and Rufus! This outing we are going to one of my go-to destinations for gifts and fun stuff to decorate with. This is my friend Lisa’s shop and it is certainly a Unique Boutique – filled with vintage and handmade finds. It is one of those places that you will go back to again, and again! Inside Unique Boutique is a cute section, Poochie Couture, that caters to the needs of our best friends, our dogs! Poochie Couture features limited-edition, custom designed dresses for your dog, doggie strollers, special doggie treats, designer dog carriers and much more. Rufus and Toto were having a ball there!!

Lets stroll now and see what Lisa and her over 40 vendors have today. LOVING the stack of vintage suitcases, so much in fact that the top one came home with me.

Unique Boutique carries Annie Sloan chalk paint! Grabbed a few cans of that to work on a few pieces at home.

Handmade jewelry made from vintage bits and bobs – love the display! And the two doggins’ found some dog jewelry to try on. Don’t they look cute!?

Delicious handmade Biscotti from Pleitez Lavender – and they are fabulous!!

Even the dogs found the doggie snacks! Wonderful pillows for your home…

…and handmade boxes made by Bohemian Mojo, a local artist who has a degree in art and interior design.

Time to round up the gang and go pay for our finds. Sadie waits at the check-out counter….

A Trip To Vintage Market

If you have been following along, you will know that I am taking Sadie Mae, Toto and Rufus on a little shopping spree with me and the stop after American Country was to a beautiful shop called Vintage Market, also located in Turlock, California. I have posted about this shop before – just click here to take you there.

The experience of shopping Vintage Market is just wonderful – from the distressed wood floors, high industrial style ceiling to the used brick walls – the ambiance is magical, lovely-to-the-bones-magical. Your eyes will not know where to fall as there is so much inventory to browse through. There are new items mixed in with eclectic metal pieces, antique market baskets, lighting fixtures, furniture, handmade jewelry and paintings, linens, dishes, garden accessories – just to name a little bit of their offerings.

I know several of the lovely women who sell at Vintage Market. Just inside the front door is Doris’ section. Doris is very talented and makes pillows, bags and aprons to sell along with her vintage finds. She also has a blog called Dogwood Designs where she shares about her handmade creations – and man, can she sew!

Below is my friend Andrea (aka Andi) who has a gorgeous space called J. Blackbird. She and her mother, Jenny, have a keen eye for all things French and pretty! Their space is filled with Euro grain sacks, linens, religious figurines, ruffled bags, handmade pillows and gorgeous handmade jewelry. Miss Sadie Mae got to spend a few moments with Andi, too…..

….as well as hangout with the lovely ruffled linen handbags! It was a girly moment!!

Another dealer has these fabulous green metal gym lockers for sale and they came from Santa Cruz, California. LOVE the old patina!

Rise and Shine!!

Wake up! Morning is here! Stretch, breathe the cool morning air in and run down to start the coffee pot. Nothing like the softness of the morning light and the smell of a freshly brewed pot of coffee.

Tomorrow starts a new season for all of us. Hard to believe that today is the last day of summer. Summer brought a lot with her this year, including my recent find of the red and white antique quilt. All handmade, tiny little stitches and in nearly perfect condition. Quite a find for $25.00. Bright and cheerful!
